Welcome
to the University of Mary Washingtons Digital Archive. Originally created during the 2007-08 academic year to celebrate the Universitys Centennial, the repository now contains a growing collection of digital resources, which are highlighted below.
The Centennial Image Collection began as a collaborative project between UMW faculty, staff, and students to preserve the University's rich history for future generations. Hundreds of historic photographs and documents from the University's archives have been scanned and cataloged and are now available for the UMW community and the public to explore.
The James L. Farmer Collection makes available images from the James L. Farmer Collection housed in the Special Collections of UMW's Simpson Library. James L. Farmer was the founder of the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE), the organizer of the 1961 Freedom Rides, and a steadfast advocate for the principle of nonviolent resistance. Farmer served as Distinguished Professor of History and American Studies at Mary Washington College from 1985 to 1998 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation.s highest civilian honor, in 1998.
The Theatre Poster Collection houses the posters created for plays and musicals produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance. An ongoing project will enlarge the collection to include artwork, photos, articles, and programs for productions dating back as far as 1912, when students presented Alice in Wonderland at the State.s Normal and Industrial School for Women.
